Project Overview

Bright Blue Foods is a leading manufacturer of cakes and desserts, supplying some of the UK’s biggest retailers. With tight margins and strict regulatory requirements, BBF relies on robust, compliant utilities to maintain its production pace and environmental responsibilities

The Challenge

BBF’s effluent treatment plant (ETP) had fallen into significant disrepair under a previous operator.

These issues combined to create a major operational and compliance risk, threatening both the environment and the site’s ability to maintain production. Previous O&M providers had failed to address the challenges adequately.

The Solution

BBF selected Aqua Operations to take over operations and maintenance of the site’s ETP under a new contract. The decision was driven by deep operational expertise along with our transparent and collaborative approach with customers.

With strong technical capability and proven track record in managing high-risk industrial water infrastructure, we were able to take fast, decisive action to stabilise the plant

Implementation Actions:

    • Immediate site mobilisation post-award
    • Plant safety and environmental risk mitigation prioritised
    • Risk register approach adopted to systematically eliminate critical issues
    • Focused rehabilitation of tanks, membranes, and electrical systems

Our Approach

Glanua prioritises the seamless operation of existing facilities during the project, emphasising careful sequencing to switch from current to new equipment. The commissioning plan is strategically crafted early on, ensuring alignment with the operations team for a smooth transition.

The Results

Key Outcomes:

  • Improved plant performance: Resulting in lower Mogden charges
  • Strategic cost control: Open book +3% pricing reduced variable O&M spend
  • Reliability restored: Tanks relined, assets repaired, and inspections brought up to date
  • Succession planning: Knowledge transfer and operational continuity now built into the service
  • Planned over reactive: Increase in preventive maintenance reduced breakdowns
  • Return on investment (ROI): Positive outcomes began immediately following contract award

Customer Feedback

The BBF team has responded positively to the transformation, and discussions are underway to extend the partnership with the deployment of new technologies to optimise site operations.

Under this trusted partnership and with mutual commitment and aligned goals, BBF and Aqua Operations are set to continue building on their shared success, discussing further CAPEX investment opportunities for additional savings and performance gains by exploring the deployment of new technologies to optimise site operations.
