Project Overview

Case study: Emergency DAF System deployment at a food manufacturing site, UK

A world leading soft-drinks manufacturer based in Yorkshire, operating the largest soft-drinks dilution and bottling facility by volume in Europe.

The Challenge

Due to recent water scarcity events, the client’s current soft water supply came under scrutiny. Although their water utility provider guaranteed continued supply, it acknowledged that water quality, specifically hardness could fluctuate if alternative sources were used. Critically, the utility could not provide sufficient data on the characteristics of these alternative supplies.

This uncertainty posed a significant operational risk to the client’s production process, which is highly sensitive to water quality.

The outage led to the increased operational costs associated with the volume of daily wastewater with tankers being employed to remove the wastewater produced whilst the factory was kept in operation. The hire of storage tanks to manage flow rates within sewer discharge limits was also employed. These factors highlighted a critical need for rapid intervention to remove the threat to factory operations and to ensure the wastewater plant to be operational to enable the factory to maintain output.

Objectives

The client engaged Glanua (Aqua Operations) to undertake a comprehensive market appraisal to identify commercially available and scalable water treatment technologies suited to the client’s facility. This process was followed by a feasibility study that assessed how these technologies could be practically deployed, considering the client’s operational requirements. A full cost-benefit analysis was also conducted, taking into account not only capital and operational expenditures but also the broader environmental, social and economic impacts.

The Solution

Glanua (Aqua Operations) took a structured approach to assess and identify the best course of action:

  1. Market Appraisal: Reviewed a range of water treatment technologies suitable for large-scale bottling operations.
  2. Feasibility Study: Evaluated practical implementation constraints on-site including spatial, operational, and resource considerations.
  3. Cost-Benefit Analysis: Compared capital and operational costs alongside environmental and social impacts, ensuring sustainability and commercial viability.

Our Approach

Glanua prioritises the seamless operation of existing facilities during the project, emphasising careful sequencing to switch from current to new equipment. The commissioning plan is strategically crafted early on, ensuring alignment with the operations team for a smooth transition.

 Results & Impact

Glanua’s strategic guidance empowered the client to take decisive action, ensuring continuity and quality of production even under constrained water supply scenarios. By proactively addressing the risk, the client reinforced its position as a resilient and forward-thinking industry leader.

  • Operational resilience against water quality fluctuations.
  • Environmental compliance with future sustainability goals.
  • Cost-effective investment with long-term value.
