Glanua Inspiring Next Generation Engineers in Yorkshire & Humber

If you were an engineer, what would you do? That’s the question that Primary Engineer, a fantastic not-for-profit organisation asks students across the UK from as young as 5 years up to 18 years old to introduce engineering into classrooms and open young minds to the world of possibilities that a career in engineering can offer. https://www.primaryengineer.com

Glanua was proud to be one of the sponsors of this year’s initiative, which sees engineers visit schools to share their experiences and inspire students – all completely free of charge. It’s a wonderfully inclusive programme, open to all schools and those home schooled across the UK.

Following these school visits, students are invited to take part in the annual “If you were an engineer, what would you do?” competition and they entered in their thousands, with over 100,000 submissions received from across the UK!

As a company with a diverse team of engineers spanning design, civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental disciplines and more, it gives us great pride to help spark curiosity and creativity in the next generation. And those happy faces made the entire experience all the more worthwhile!

From robotic whales to clean the oceans, to automatic greenhouse watering systems and self-watering flower pots, we were very pleased to see efficient water use and environmental care were amongst some of the many themes.

We were especially pleased to have Rachael Fox, Head of Programme Delivery at Yorkshire Water, join us on the day of the final at Sheffield University. Rachael gave a talk about the wide range of engineering careers available and the vital role the water and wastewater sector plays.

A big well done to our very own Phil Muir, UK Operations Director, and Ian Foster, Northern Regional Operations Director for presenting over 40 awards to the students.

This was our first time supporting an initiative like this in UK schools and it certainly won’t be the last. We’re proud to support a region we’re operating in and we hope to be involved in even more of this type of engagement next year.
